In addition to the theoretical courses, students take several courses oriented toward the practical application of OR techniques in real-world environments. These courses are designed to prepare students for their Industry Projects and for careers as OR analysts and consultants.

  • Consulting Practices

    The Consulting Practices course provides critical analysis of consulting methods, trends, and issues. Students learn to apply principles of project management, communications, negotiation, and leadership, and they share their experiences with consultants and executives both on campus and at industry sites. The seminar-style class provides an energetic and constructive forum for discussing the challenges and opportunities students face as they embark on their projects and experiment with new ways to present ideas.

  • Best Practices

    The Best Practices course explores a number of exemplar operations research implementations drawn from the Edelman Prize competition, the highly esteemed applied operations research journal Interfaces, and COE experience. By studying a cross-section of successful applications, students immediately see the relevance of their technical courses and learn ways to apply these methods in their own work.

  • Application Development

    Students receive instruction in the use of the latest OR tools and technologies. Students become familiar with many commercial software applications commonly used in practice, and learn how to develop OR applications using these products. The curriculum features courses, tutorials, and seminars in the use of software packages including statistical applications, databases, simulation modeling packages, optimization solvers, mathematical modeling languages, and the MS Office Suite with Visual Basic applications.

Elective Courses

Students take courses of their own choosing during the final academic term of the program after the Industry Projects are complete. The flexibility of elective courses allows students to prepare for their own specific career objectives.

In many cases, students use the course electives to learn more about the business sector of their Industry Project sponsor as they become interested in pursuing a career in that sector. Relevant elective courses may be taken from any UBC department; in particular, students may choose from among Sauder's numerous MBA, MSc, and PhD course offerings.
